Official races began close to the end of the 18th century, most notably the Doncaster Gold Cup. First run in 1776, it is still run today, making it the oldest of its kind in the world.
Each of the Boroughs has its own rich and curious past, as does Sheffield which has fallen into the annals of history for its famous advances in steel and cutlery production.
